How to keep your HVAC system running smoothly

You have had a long day working out under the hot sun, just to arrive home to find out that your HVAC is no longer working. This is something you just can’t lift the hood up and have a look at it. Most people who do hvac repair have to go to school to learn how to repair or install a unit. However, there is a lot that you can do at home to keep them running smoothly.

We will take a look at a few things that you can do yourself to keep your HVAC system running well in the summer and even in the winter time.

Air filter

ACThis is overlooked in most cases. The filter is what allows the air to go through your unit. If it can’t get the proper ventilation, it will work harder making it over heat. This would trigger the safety and would shut your system down.

Cleaning a filter or replacing it can be done on your own. Just pull your filter out which will be in your home somewhere. Take the filter out and if it can be cleaned, then run water on it and let it dry. If that don’t clean it, then replace it. There is a number on the side of it that you can tell the hardware store. They should have the right size for you. They are pretty standard in size.

Fans

Just like fans that you run in your home, after a while, they start to collect dirt. This will slow your fan down, and won’t allow the right mixture of air to travel through the ducts of your home. If this gets overlook in time, it will damage the bearings that allow the fan to rotate. The fan will start to make a lot of noise.

If you let it go, you will have an HVAC repairman to replace it. This can get costly.

Air ducts

They need to be blown out at least once a year. What it will start doing is collecting dust. When your system turns on, you will see a cloud of dust. This means it needs cleaning.

HVAC drain

Your system will have a drain coming off of it, on the outside of the unit. If you see it collecting water, it maybe is a clog in your drain. This is very easy to fix. Just stick a wire up the tube till you unclog your system.
